Guide Dogs for the Blind – Colfax, CA Puppy Raisers are proud to raise guide dog puppies for the largest guide dog school in North America.

Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) provides exceptional guide dogs for individuals who are blind or low vision.  Volunteer puppy raisers receive a guide dog puppy at approximately eight weeks old, and the pup will return to one of GDB’s campuses for formal training between 15 and 17 months old.  We are responsible for teaching the puppies good manners and providing them with comprehensive socialization experiences.  Puppy raisers can have other pets in their home and if you are not able to commit to raising a puppy full time, there are still other ways to get involved with our local puppy club, such as puppy sitting.  And, GDB’s puppy raising program complements many FFA, 4H, home schooling, high school, and college programs.

Our group meets on the first and second Sundays of every month from 2:00-4:00 pm, and the fourth Wednesday of the month from 5:00-6:00 pm.  Our raisers live in Roseville, Granite Bay, Newcastle, Auburn, Grass Valley, and Colfax, so our meetings are held in those towns.

I think the guide dog for the blind is the most wonderful organization. And sometime day when the time is right for me I would love to participate in raising a puppy. I admire and Pam and Miike for their honorable mission in doing what they do for guide dogs. They are a wonderful example to follow. I LOVE DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are active GDB raisers with Eyes for Tomorrow in Reno, moving to Auburn in January. We would like to visit your club in January. Can you please share when and where your meetings in January will be?

    Thank you.

My daughter and I would be interested in getting more information on raising a puppy and what is involved. She is 14 years old.
Are you allowed to have other dogs at home? We have two dogs and a cat in our home.
    Thank you!

    1. Hello Samantha,

I’m so glad you are interested in raising these wonderful dogs for Guide Dogs for the Blind. First and foremost, you need a willing heart, a teachable spirit and a lot of time. There is a lot involved in raising these dogs, but I will teach you all you need to know for raising a dog.

Two dogs and a cat is a lot, but we will need to talk about your dogs first and find out if they are a good match for raising a Guide Dog puppy.

Email me at unruhs@aol.com with your email address and phone number, and let’s set a time when we can talk on the phone.

      Susie Unruh
